Thoughts from a Distant Hiker (4/03)

I am now 93 and not likely to get onto the Long Trail again. But I read every issue of Ridge Lines from cover to cover. It’s my best way of reminding myself of the wonderfully happy days that I and my first wife and our two small boys used to have on the Long Trail and its various approach trails near Burlington.

As my boys grew older, we went farther afield and I ended up an Adirondack 46er and then a 111er. Mountains have always been in my blood – first the Lake District in England, then the Alps, then New England and New York, then the Himalayas and other mountains all over the world.

Despite the joys of these high peaks, Vermont’s Green Mountains have always held a special place in my heart.
